Metal Surface Roughness on Resonators

A big surprise with thin substrates is that metal surface roughness is a major factor, and not just for loss. Roughness also adds substantial series inductance. THis inductance can make the effective dielectric constant appear to increase by as much as 15%, even though the dielectric constant is unchanged. In this session, we use Sonnet to analuse the effect of roughness on a distributed resonator.
