Dielectric Editor

The Dielectric Editor dialog box may be opened in one of two modes: Adding/Editing a dielectric layer and Adding/Editing a dielectric brick material. This dialog box allows you to enter the parameters of a dielectric in order to define a dielectric material for use in your circuit.

Using Variables in this dialog box

The dielectric defined here is to be used for a dielectric layer in your circuit.

Mat. Name: Enter the desired name for the dielectric material to be used in the layer here.

Thickness: Enter the desired thickness of the dielectric layer here. It is possible to also edit this value in the Dielectric Layers page.

Specify Using: You may chose to define your dielectric loss using Conductivity or Resistivity. Select whichever value you have available for your dielectric material. The dialog box is updated to include a text entry box for whichever choice you make in the drop list.

Anisotropic: If you wish the dielectric material to be anisotropic, indicating that its parameters are different in each dimension, click on this checkbox. The dialog box is updated with an additional set of entries; one for the x and y (view in the project editor) direction and one for the z direction. You can then enter the parameters by editing the entries in the row.

Erel: Enter the relative dielectric constant here.

Dielectric Loss Tan: Enter the dielectric loss tangent here.

Conductivity: Enter the dielectric conductivity here. This text entry box only appears when "Conductivity" is selected in the Specify Using drop list.

Resistivity: Enter the dielectric resistivity here. This text entry box only appears when "Resistivity" is selected in the Specify Using drop list.

Mrel: Enter the relative magnetic permeability here.

Mag Loss Tan: Enter the magnetic loss tangent of the dielectric layer material here.

Select Dielectric from Library: Click on this button to select a dielectric material from your dielectric library to use in a dielectric layer. The Dielectric Library dialog box is opened.

Advanced

This section of the dialog box is not displayed by default. Click on the ">" to display the Advanced options.

Brick Z Partitions: Z subsectioning of dielectric bricks is controlled by the value entered in this text entry box. There is an entry box for each layer. It is important that a sufficient number of z partitions are used in order to obtain accurate simulation results.

WARNING: Misuse of dielectric bricks can lead to significantly inaccurate results. It is highly recommended that you read the Dielectric Bricks chapter in the Sonnet User's Guide before attempting to use dielectric bricks.
