Pi-Equivalent R,L,C Values

Pi-Equivalent R,L,C Values is one of the measurement categories in the Manage Curves dialog box.

The equations in this category assume a Pi-topology, pictured below:

This category is split into two sub-categories: "Branches - Series" and "Branches- Shunt." The Series branches represent connections between ports, represented by ZSeries12 above. The Shunt Branches represent connections between a port and ground, represented by ZShunt1 and ZShunt2 above.

Each branch contains two topologies: Series and Parallel. The Series topology assumes that you have a resistor and a reactive element (capacitor or inductor) connected in series while the Parallel topology assumes you have a resistor and a reactive element connected in parallel. Both types of topologies are shown below.

For each topology, it is possible to calculate the Resistance, Inductance or Capacitance. An example of the Inductance for the series topology of the series branch from Port 1 to Port 2 is shown below. The measurement selection in the Manage Curves dialog box is shown on the left and the circuit is pictured on the right that identifies the inductance.

Another example, illustrated below, shows the Resistance for the parallel topology of the shunt branch for Port 2. The measurement selection in the Manage Curves dialog box is shown on the left and the circuit is pictured on the right that identifies the resistance.

While all of the examples used so far depict two port circuits, Pi Models can be used to represent any number of ports. An example of a three port Pi Model is shown below. There is an impedance connected between each port and an impedance from each port to ground.
