Sonnet Software Offers the Top Prize at the IMS2006 Student Paper Award

Syracuse, NY, June 20, 2006: Sonnet Software Inc would like to congratulate Mr. Vahid Miraftab, a Post Doctoral Fellow at the University of Waterloo, who was named the 1st Place Winner at this year's IMS 2006 MTT-S Student Paper Competition.   Mr. Miraftab was awarded the top prize of a copy of Sonnet Suites Professional version donated to his university of choice.

Dr. James Rautio (Founder and President, Sonnet Software, Inc.) and Mr. Vahid Miraftab

Mr. Miraftab wrote a paper titled "Automated Microwave Filter Tuning by Extracting Human Experience in Terms of Linguistic Rules Using Fuzzy Controllers."  The paper introduces modeling of human experience by linguistic if-then rules in terms of fuzzy logic controllers for tuning microwave filters. The approach could be used for any microwave circuit tuning problem that involves human expert information provided that the expert information could be described in terms of linguistic if-then rules. A fully automated experimental setup is implemented by high resolution motors with flexible leads to make the tuning possible. A 3-pole Chebyshev waveguide filter is used to demonstrate the concept. The measured results prove the validity of the method.

Brief Biography: Vahid Miraftab (S'96) received his B.Sc. degree from the Sharif University of Technology, Tehran in 1998, M.Sc. degree from the Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) in 2000, and Ph.D. degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada in 2005 all in electrical and computer engineering. He is currently working as a PDF at the University of Waterloo and COM DEV, Cambridge, Canada. His research interests include design and tuning of RF/Microwave circuits/filters, RFIC design, and artificial intelligence.
